MISE-EN MUSIC FESTIVAL 2023 attempts a piercing view into aesthetic,
technological, and social/political quandaries in contemporary music. Over four days,
the ensemble will present works by twenty-six international composers chosen from
1681 submissions from around the world. This year’s festival combines six meticulously curated concerts with workshops and composer presentations. All events are free and
open to the public.

Our opening concert on June 19 at MISE-EN_PLACE (Greenpoint) is produced in
collaboration with Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council, and includes works by Swiss
and American composers Maja Cerar (Switzerland), Terri Hron (USA), Paul Matthusen
(USA), Annie Ruefenacht (Switzerland), and Heinz Holliger (Switzerland).

On June 20, the MISE-EN MUSIC FESTIVAL moves to NYU Bobst Library Avery,
Fisher Feldstein Immersion Room, to present performances of electronic works by
Claire Hu (USA), Nathan Haering (USA), Ian Whillock (USA), MASSIMO VITO
AVANTAGGIATO (Italy), and han geul lee (South Korea).

On the evening of June 20, Tenri Cultural Institute will come alive with a variety of small
instrumental ensembles. The program includes works by Judith Lang Zaimont (USA),
Dinah Bianchi (USA), Sepehr Pirasteh (Iran), Dylan Findley (USA), and Moon Young Ha
(South Korea/USA).

Returning to MISE-EN_PLACE on June 21, the festival presents acoustic and electro-
acoustic pieces by composers from around the world; Hans Lennart Jonsäll (Sweden), Itzá García (Mexico), Arvid Kraft (Sweden), and Alberto Carretero (Spain).

Later in the evening, (9PM) we continue at our home venue, MISE-EN_PLACE, with our
most eclectic program, combining research into new technology and acoustic
complexity. The program begins with a virtual reality piece by Rob Hamilton (USA) and
an electro-acoustic string duet by Fredrik Gran (Sweden), and then explore acoustic
intricacies through works by Olga Rayeva (Russia/Germany) and Marin Khorkova
(Russia).

The final performance of the festival, on June 22, will be held at the National Opera
Center (Manhattan). This program spans from mesmerizing duets to awe-inspiring large
ensemble works. The composers are Yang Liu (China), Bryndan Moondy (USA), Jeff
Nichols (USA), Patrick Marcland (France), and Ana Gnjatović (Serbia).

This year, in addition to our 6 concerts, ensemble mise-en is thrilled to present a
workshop series in collaboration with the New York University Music Department. This
program intends to fuel critical discussion and collaboration between composers,
musicians, and all parties to new music performance on the social implications (and
prognoses) of contemporary music trends. Further details on these events will be
announced in the near future, as the festival draws closer.
